Town of Schoharie Invites Public To Shape The Future: I-88 Exit 23 Interchange Workshop
Schoharie, NY — The Town of Schoharie has launched the Schoharie Gateway Plan, a critical planning initiative focused on the I-88 Exit 23 interchange, and is inviting the public to participate in an upcoming community workshop.
The Schoharie Gateway Area is a 350-acre district at the I-88 Exit 23 interchange that serves as a primary entry point to the Schoharie Valley. As the town's most visible entrance, the corridor plays a defining role in shaping first impressions for residents and visitors alike. The planning process seeks to balance potential economic development with the community's commitment to protecting the area's deep-rooted rural identity including scenic views of the sweeping agricultural valleys and Terrace Mountain, environmental resources, and the area's historic and agrarian character.
Building on the 2025 Town and Village Comprehensive Plan, which recommended a design-based zoning code for the interchange, the Schoharie Gateway Plan will move beyond conventional land-use zoning to focus on how buildings look and how they fit into the surrounding landscape. The goal is to translate community values into enforceable development standards that prevent low-density sprawl and ensure future growth respects the character of Schoharie.
This project is funded through a New York State Smart Growth Grant administered by the Department of State's Office of Planning, Development & Community Infrastructure, supported through the Environmental Protection Fund.
Community members are encouraged to attend the upcoming public workshop and make their voices heard:
