Sweet Tree Farm: Where The Grass Really Is Greener
Nearly three decades ago, Judy Pangman and Frank Johnson planted the seed that became Sweet Tree Farm—a name now tied to grass-fed beef, pastured pork, and sustainable practices. From day one, it was a true partnership. Judy, pregnant with Arleigh, devoured books on soil health and holistic grazing before “grass-fed” was even a buzzword. Frank, a fourth-generation farmer, had the grit to turn her plans into pasture. While Frank quit his job and leaned fully into farm life, Judy kept her job—and the family benefits—that kept the dream afloat. In 1997, the year Arleigh was born, Judy and Frank launched the farm with just two cows—Mamma and Baby—and a whole lot of determination. With one boot rooted in tradition and the other in rural ingenuity, Arleigh now bridges the old and the new, carrying Sweet Tree Farm forward with the same spirit that planted its first seeds.

Built to Last: Lamont Engineers Homegrown Legacy
Long before CAD drawings and digital surveys, Henry Lamont’s story began on Schoharie County soil—tilled, lived on, and passed down through generations. “My family has been in this county since 1802,” Henry says. “They moved here shortly after the Revolution—first West Fulton, then Richmondville, and finally Cobleskill in the 1870s.” This deep connection to place would become the foundation of Lamont Engineers, a trusted civil engineering firm serving the region for more than four decades.

Sweet Success: How Little Deb’s Became a Big Part of the Community
If you’re looking for a place where blue goo meets gummy bears, where rubber duckies bathe in hot fudge, and where the community calendar includes both ice cream glow parties and Christmas in July—look no further than Little Deb’s. This ice cream shop is more than a summer stop—it’s a full-blown happiness headquarters, run by a woman whose creativity could power the whole county.
That creative woman? Little Deb herself, a lifelong Schoharie County resident, career waitress, and now the queen of cones. When Deb pulls into her parking lot off route 7 in the happy hamlet of Warnerville, she still gets goosebumps. “I just look at the sign and think, wow. I can’t believe this is mine,” with a smile that runs as deep as the roots she planted in her hometown of Richmondville, NY.

Steph Shultes: Steward of the Storytellers
Some careers start with a big dream. Others start with a bored young girl at a summer job and one very persuasive anthropologist mentor. For Stephanie Shultes, SEEC’s 2024 ENLIGHTEN Award winner and director/anthropologist of the Iroquois Museum in Howes Cave, the path to becoming one of the region’s most dedicated cultural stewards wasn’t clearly marked. But it was entirely rooted in place.
“I started as curator here around 1991,” Steph recalls. “Then in 2015, I took over as director — I said I’d do it for a year,” she adds with a laugh. “Ten years later, I’m still here.”
The Iroquois Museum, shaped like a traditional longhouse, offers more than exhibits—it invites visitors into a living story that connects past and present. Located on the ancestral lands of the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka (Mohawk), the museum honors all six Haudenosaunee nations—Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora—through art, history, and land-based education. At the heart of it all are Stephanie Shultes and Chris Johanssen Hanks, two non-native women committed to preserving and sharing the rich culture of the Haudenosaunee people.
